Welcome, Principal Mough!
The Region 3 Leadership Team is pleased to announce that Mr. Matthew Mough has been appointed as principal of Twain Middle School (MS), effective August 1, 2023.
Mr. Mough has served as acting principal at Hayfield Secondary School (SS) for the past year. Prior to assuming the acting principal role, Mr. Mough served as associate principal, assistant principal, and history teacher over his sixteen-year tenure at Hayfield SS. Additionally, Mr. Mough served as a social studies teacher and varsity boys’ basketball and soccer coach at Heritage HS in Loudoun County.
Over his career in education, Mr. Mough has had many accomplishments. As a teacher leader, he grew the Advanced Placement (AP) World History program into the largest AP course offered at Hayfield SS and was instrumental in dramatically increasing the number of Black and Hispanic students taking AP exams. He also more than doubled the number of students earning the College Board’s AP Scholar designation. As assistant principal, he expanded the Young Scholars program at the high school level and formed the AP Capstone course, furthering his commitment to providing more students access to rigorous academic studies. He believes that all students need access to such coursework and collaborates with teachers so that all staff members promote and support rigorous learning opportunities for students. He is known for his even-handed, inclusive leadership style, and as a parent in FCPS, he has this perspective to guide his decisions as principal.
Mr. Mough holds a Bachelor of Arts in History, with a minor in Secondary Education, from Westminster College in New Wilmington, PA, and a Master of Arts in Education & Human Development in the Field of Educational Leadership & Administration from The George Washington University. He also holds a Virginia Postgraduate Professional License in Administration and Supervision Pre-K – 12, History and Social Sciences.
Please join us in warmly welcoming Mr. Mough to the Twain Middle School community. Together, we will strive for educational excellence, maintain a positive and inclusive culture, and ensure the success and well-being of all our students.
